Launching the KonKoop Research Map: A New Tool for Navigating Peace and Conflict Studies in Eastern and Southeast Europe

by Katarina Damčević

Launched in 2025, the KonKoop Research Map offers an interactive overview of over 80 organizations conducting peace and conflict research across Eastern and Southeast Europe and Central Asia. This blog post introduces the new digital tool that allows users to explore the region’s diverse research landscape using intuitive filters and detailed institutional profiles.

We are pleased to announce the launch of the KonKoop Research Map, now officially available at https://conflictresearchmap.ios-regensburg.de/. Developed as one of the main outputs of the KonKoop research network and implemented by the Leibniz Institute for East and Southeast European Studies (IOS), this new interactive tool offers a comprehensive, searchable overview of organizations engaged in Peace and Conflict Research across Eastern and Southeast Europe and Central Asia.

The map was conceptualized by Katarina Damčević (IOS) in collaboration with Thiemo Feldmann (IOS), and was designed and technically implemented by the agency Valentum Kommunikation.

A Networked Landscape of Knowledge

The screenshot shows various organizations and filter options displayed on the map.

The research map is one of the core outputs of the KonKoop network, which seeks to foster interdisciplinary collaboration and knowledge exchange in the study of contested orders and conflict dynamics. The map presents over 80 institutions across a broad geographic region—ranging from Czechia and the former Yugoslavia to Central Asia—that are active in research on peacebuilding, conflict transformation, and international security.

Each entry offers concise yet informative summaries of the organizations, highlighting their thematic priorities, types of activity, regional engagement, and contact details. Visitors can use intuitive filter functions to explore the map by category—including organization type, country, thematic focus, and more—making it a practical gateway to this diverse research landscape.

Accessibility and User Guidance

The screenshot shows a map with numbered markers and a filter panel with various search options for organizations.

Presented entirely in English, the map is accessible to a wide international audience. A built-in manual with overlay tooltips and navigation hints supports first-time users, ensuring a user-friendly experience even for those less familiar with interactive data visualization.

The platform is based on WordPress, Leaflet.js, and OpenStreetMap, which together enable an intuitive, responsive design. This technical foundation also supports long-term sustainability through a backend-managed CSV interface for easy updates and maintenance.

Looking Ahead

The screenshot shows a legend panel explaining the map’s marker types and clustering system. It defines three organization categories (Applied, Mixed, Academic), and describes how markers are grouped into circular clusters of varying sizes based on organization density in each area.

The research map represents a dynamic tool—open to updates, expansions, and user feedback. As data continues to evolve and partnerships expand, the map will remain an evolving interface for fostering regional and thematic connectivity within the field of Peace and Conflict Studies.

We invite scholars, practitioners, and interested users to explore the map and help us further strengthen this collective research infrastructure:
